On Phonically Based Analogy

چکیده
Perhaps more than any linguist in the 20 century, and now into the 21, whether a generativist or a specialist in historical linguistics, Raimo Anttila, the honorand – and deservedly so – of this volume, has brought to the forefront of linguistic thinking and theorizing the phenomenon of analogy, understood here (following Raimo) in a broad sense to refer to any change in a given form due to the influence of another form. His textbook on historical linguistics (Anttila 1972/1989), a classic in its own right, made clear the prominent role that analogy plays in the understanding of language change, and established (perhaps, re-established) the semiotic underpinnings of analogical change. These views were elaborated upon in Anttila 1977.1 Still, even with so much attention to the topic, questions remain about analogy. One such question, given that analogy depends on a connection being made between two forms (the influencer and the influencee, so to speak), is just what sorts of connections can serve as the basis for analogical pressures and ultimately for analogical re-formations. In this admittedly brief piece,2 intended as a recognition of Raimo's "analogical" influence on my own thinking, I present a number of examples I

Architects and Engineers Differences: A comparison between problem solving performances of architects and engineers in the ideation phase of an analogy-based design
This study examines how analogy affects problem-solving in ideation phase of design among architects and engineers. For this purpose, a design problem was given to master and Ph.D. students of engineering and architecture. They were given two optional analogy sources to choose and be inspired by one. From the analysis of design sessions, using different coding groups and the application of the ...
متن کاملAerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...

متن کاملAnalogy in Farabi's Thought
Thinkers and philosophers have constantly benefited from different approaches of reasoning to explore and justify their ideas. Theses reasoning approaches are considered as the principle instruments in speculative activities of the thinkers. To this end to achieve the procedure of thinking and the way philosophers achieve objectives, it is necessary to recognize their reasoni...
متن کاملآفرینش معماری به روش قیاس با طبیعت
Architectural design inspired by nature is one of the conventional methods in architectural design, but different types of the influence of nature on architectural design are not well studied yet. In spite of the importance of the type of inspiration, there is not a significant research about the relation of this method with other methods of architectural creation, nor about the correct way of ...
